Simon May the Illustrator

Meet Simon May. Simon was born in the UK, he was raised in Perth and now lives in Melbourne. He has had a lifelong passion for cars, art and loves a good pint of ale….he’s also a huge fan of the drummer from Def Leppard…..but that’s another story!

What did you want to do when you were a kid?

Design and eventually build and race cars.

What’s your first car memory?

There’s many, I clearly remember playing in a blue Ferrari 400i in my dad’s workshop in London.

Who taught you to drive and in what.

My Mum & Dad taught me to drive, the first car I drove properly was an ex WW2 Willy’s Jeep in India.

What car do you currently drive?

My daily driver duties have been shared over the last nine years between my ’84 Rover Vitesse and a ’68 Mustang Fastback.

What was the last concert you went to & where.

Ha, would you believe Def Leppard at Rod Laver Arena – I’m a fan of the Drummer!

Ford or Holden?

Oooh, we own both, but I tend to sway towards the blue oval.

If you were driving from Melbourne to Darwin who would you have in the car with you (up to 4 people) and what would you be listening to?

I would say the wife and kids, but only taking four people would mean leaving one behind! Otherwise just a couple of my best mates. Either way the tunes would cover grunge, rock, country and blues (no Wiggles). My musical tastes are as varied as my cars.

Where’s you’re favourite place to drive?

Tasmania. We did a trip around the island seven years ago in the mustang, it felt so free and fun compared to driving in our nanny state!

Where’s the best place to have a drink.

Any old characterful pub that serves a good pint of ale.

What would be your dream car to restore.

The next project in my shed – at the moment it’s my ’67 XR Falcon Wagon.

2 top cars in your dream collection

’68 Ford GT40
’64 Ferrari 250 Gt Berlinetta Lusso
