Size does matter!

Whether you’re in the process of buying a spray booth or simply replacing or upgrading your spray booth motor, you need to ask yourself, “what size motor do I actually need?”

There is no doubt that motors for fans are essential for the function and performance of spray booths.  Proper airflow is not only necessary for the protection of the operator, but it is necessary to achieve the desired finish quality. Without them, you’ll have a tough time achieving the results you want.

Motors come in an array of sizes – 2.2kw, 4kw, 5.5kw, 7.5kw, 9kw and larger.  Quite often, the people MN Spraybooths have spoken to have a different opinion on what motor size is better for one reason or another.

It’s is a misconception that a larger motor alone increases the airflow of the spray booth.  Here’s why…..

To achieve maximum airflow from a spray booth it is important that the motor size match the size of the fan.

For example:

  • If you have a large diameter fan made from steel, and a motor with lower KW output, the motor will not have the torque required to rotate that fan at the speed required to run an automotive spray booth efficiently.
  • If you have a large motor with a small diameter fan, it may produce the airflow required to run an automotive spray booth, however the booth will naturally be drawing a lot more amperage (amps) which in turn will drastically increase your power consumption and bills.

There is much more than just a motor and fan that goes into the design of producing maximum airflow.  A good starting point for any buyer is to know that the motor size should match the size of the fan.

Other things to take into consideration include:

  • RPM output
  • Fan case design
  • Pitch of the impellers
  • Impeller design
  • Energy consumption

MN Spraybooths are conscious of producing energy efficient and cost effective solutions for their customers. They are practical in their design, producing maximum CFM airflow ratings in the market today.
